In life, there are cavities, and then there are cavities. While much of the time cavity-causing bacteria are only able to penetrate the harder outer layers of your teeth (the enamel and dentin), and therefore only need a simple filling, if decay is allowed to get out of control, germs can make it all the way to the soft insides of your teeth, which in professional dental parlance is called the “pulp”. When this happens, our Mansfield dentist, Dr. Naiman will likely have to perform what’s known as root canal therapy to alleviate pain and avoid having to extract effected teeth.
If you end up coming into Advanced Dental Care located in Plainville, MA, you can expect an experience similar to getting a filling; only it will probably take a little longer. First off, you’ll be given a local anesthetic to keep you comfortable throughout the procedure. Next, our expert Mansfield dentist Dr. Naiman will use a drill to open an access port in your enamel and dentin that will enable him to reach the pulp with another set of tools. Once the access port is open, the actual root canal begins. Using a set of progressively larger files, Dr. Naiman will scrape out the inside of your damaged tooth, all the way down to the insides of the roots that hold the tooth in your jawbone. Finally, once everything is clean, he’ll finish up by filling up the space and, if necessary, installing a crown for added strength. Soon enough, you’ll be out of the chair and on your way out of the door. (In a week or so, you’ll come in again for a follow-up appointment to make sure nothing’s infected.)
The dental team at Advanced Dental Care understand that it’s not all that fun to get a root canal. That being said, as inconvenient as getting a root canal might seem, living with the pain of a severely damaged tooth is no picnic and can cause more extensive dental problems in the future. Having a tooth pulled is less fun still and only performed by our Mansfield dentist in worst-cased scenarios. Call or use our website to schedule a dental exam posthaste.
